Local attractions in Silverstone
Many people spend their weekends and holidays in Silverstone due to its main attractions, the F1 and MotoGP racing circuits. Silverstone often hosts the British Grand Prix and due to our close proximity (only 6.5 miles or 10 minutes away by car), we can accommodate numerous guests over this weekend. You will also have the opportunity of fulfilling your childhood dreams by driving the supercar or motorcycle of your choice at this world-famous venue.
Besides the Silverstone racetrack, the area has lots of other attractions worth visiting, particularly the Stowe Landscape Gardens:
- Bell Gate – Lord Cobham began its construction in 1717 to accommodate visitors to Stowe.
- Captain Cook’s Monument – This structure was built to honour Captain James Cook, widely acknowledged as the first person to voyage around the world in both directions.
- Corinthian Arch – Designed in 1764 and completed in 1767, the Corinthian Arch appears as a serene structure in a landscape painting.
- Doric Arch – This monument was erected in 1767 to honour Princess Amelia, the second daughter of King George II and sister of King George III. The princess was a frequent visitor to Stowe as she was a close friend of Lady Temple.
- Fane of Pastoral Poetry – Its original name is Gibb’s Building in honour of its architect (James Gibb).
- Gothic Temple – Built in 1741, this is James Gibb’s final piece of work in the Stowe Garden. It was initially called the Temple of Liberty.
- Hermitage – The architect William Kent built the Hermitage at the same time as the Temple of Venus. Experts consider it to be an experimental work in a romantic style.
- Palladian Bridge – James Gibb directed the completion of this bridge in 1738. It is one of three identical-looking bridges built at that time.
- Queen’s Temple – This building was initially known as the Lady’s Temple, presumably in honour of Lady Cobham. The structure was built on a vaulted basement and opened from front to back.
- Temple of Ancient Virtue – William Kent designed this monument and it was completed in 1734. The architect patterned it after the Temple of Vesta. However, the structure uses the Ionic order rather than the Corinthian.
- Temple of British Worthies – Kent designed this monument in 1734 and it contains 16 busts of famous British historical figures. The busts are divided into two groups: the first includes philosophers, poets and scientists, while the second comprises monarchs, statesmen and military men.
- Temple of Concord and Victory – Construction began in 1747. Initially called the Grecian Temple, it was renamed the Temple of Concord and Victory in 1763 to celebrate the British victory in the Seven Years’ War.
- Temple of Friendship – Designed by James Gibb, construction began in approximately 1737. Although a 19th-century fire destroyed the building, it continues to draw visitors. Many describe it as a romantic ruin.
- Stoke Bruerne Canal Centre – Located in an old village in South Northamptonshire, this attraction is popular among locals. It incorporates the Waterways Museum, a pub and a café.
These Silverstone attractions and more are all within easy reach of Briary Cottages. If you are interested in visiting any of these sites, make your reservations now and give us a call or send us an email.
